Riverhead refers both to a town in Suffolk County as well as a hamlet within the town of Riverhead. The town of Riverhead is aptly named, as the mouth of the Peconic River is located here. The town of Riverhead was originally part of the town of Southold, but was separated when its residents complained that the town was so long that they could not easily attend town events or conduct town business due to the distance. Riverhead hosts the Long Island Blues Festival and the Polish Festival each summer. Wildwood State Park is also in Riverhead.

The hamlet of Riverhead is located directly around the mouth of the Peconic River. Riverhead's scenic view of the river and the bay make it a desirable place to visit. Riverhead is also quite commercial, with convenient shopping ranging from home improvement to antique shops. Riverhead is known as the “crossroads" of the East End.
